BIOLOGICAL REMOVAL OF LOW LEVELS OF CHLORDANE.

Abstract

This study investigated the removal of chlordane from a synthetic hazardous waste landfill leachate with chlordane as the only hazardous material. The chlordane concentrations investigated ranged from 0. 0 to 5. 0 mg/l. The snythetic leachate was developed using technical grade chlordane obtained from Velsicol Chemical Corporation. Acetone was used to dissolved the chlordane and transfer to the water matrix. Based on the previous success of the fixed film/fluid bed combination and its inherent advantages, this treatment concept was chosen for evaluation in this study. The presence of chlordane and the apparent biological removal had little noticeable effect on the population dynamics and performance of the fixed film/fluid bed system as indicated by analysis of the performance parameters and the biological observations. 75% to 96% removal efficiency was obtained and was mainly attributed to biodegradation of chlordane.
