Clinically Important Parameters that Influence Sensor Utility: Considerations on How Not to Make a Sensor with No (or Limited) Clinical Application

Abstract

Electrochemical sensors play an important role in clinical medicine with both amperometric and potentiometric devices used daily to guide clinical decisions. This tutorial discusses clinical considerations in designing and interpreting the results of such devices for both the diagnosis and management of diseases and relates these to the analytical characteristics of the sensor. A discussion of the epidemiological characteristics of diseases and how this impacts sensor utility is discussed.
