Finite element analysis of meniscal root attachments

Abstract

Meniscal root attachments function to anchor the menisci to the tibia and prevent meniscal extrusion when the joint is compressed. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the knee with meniscal attachments considered as continuous elements has been done. Results were similar to those encountered in previous works. However, higher compressive stresses were found in the lateral menisci after applying a 1200 N compressive load to the knee at full extension [1]. These findings support previous studies demonstrating sensitivity of contact pressures to meniscal root attachment properties, and will also help to improve meniscal replacement surgery and increase the accuracy of knee models. © 2013 IEEE.
