State of the art on the use of genetic algorithms in design of steel structures
Abstract
An introduction to GAs and how Gas can be used for optimized design of structural systems using both continuous and discrete structural elements is presented. The topics discussed include: fundamental theorem of GAs, formulation of structural optimization, penalty functions, coding and decoding, selection strategies, fitness scaling, crossover, mutation. In addition, a chronological survey of research work related to GAs in structural steel design is presented as well.
