Team teaching technical topics: An innovative approach to instruction in an introductory civil engineering course
Abstract
A pilot study involving a multi-disciplinary team-teaching instructional approach in an introductory civil engineering course was discussed. Each of the courses was targeted to emphasize critical thinking skills and problem solving skills with two major modes of instructional focus. In response to the goal of increased communication skills, traditional lecture-style instruction was extensively supplemented by a series of projects that the students completed in groups. The engineers, based on these findings, plan to continue the project in their department, and they hope to extend the educational research base by designing and implementing a longitudinal study beginning with the freshman students.
