Stabilization of power system including wind generator by fuzzy logic-controlled superconducting magnetic energy storage

Abstract

This paper deals with the transient stability enhancement of electric power system including wind generator by fuzzy logic-controlled Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) unit. A gate turn-off (GTO) thyristor-based S MES unit is able to absorb/inject active as well as reactive powers simultaneously in rapid response to power system requirements. Therefore, it can act as a good tool to decrease voltage and frequency fluctuations of the system considerably. With this view, minimization of voltage and frequency fluctuations of wind generator by SMES is also proposed in this paper. Usually, SMES is controlled through conventional controllers. However, in this work, the fuzzy logic concept is used for SMES control. From the simulation results it can be concluded that the proposed fuzzy logic-controlled SMES is a very effective device for stabilization of power system including wind generator, and minimization of voltage and frequency fluctuations of wind generator. © 2005 IEEE.
