Strength of deep reinforced concrete beams under uniformly distributed load

Abstract

Tests of ten simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams with crushed brick as coarse aggregate are reported. The loading was a uniformly distributed load applied at the top surface. It is found that the amount of web reinforcement influences only the diagonal cracking load, not the ultimate load capacity. It is also found that some of the available methods for predicting ultimate load capacity of deep beams, including the recommendations of the ACI Code are conservative, whereas the others are unconservative. Some tentative suggestions regarding modifications of the existing methods for ultimate load computation are reported with the hope that these may aid any future attempt to adapt the ACI Code provisions regarding deep beams where such beams are subjected to uniform loading.
