Unusual abundance of Podon spp. in Kuwait Bay, northwestern Arabian Gulf
Abstract
One or more species of the genus Podon Lilljeborg, 1853, but probably only P. polyphemoides (Leuckart, 1859), is (are) found in Kuwait waters. The species is more abundant in the coastal areas, especially in Kuwait Bay. This species never exceeded an abundance of 20 000 ind.m-3 but in February 2005, its abundance surprisingly rose to more than 100 000 ind.m-3 at all Kuwait Bay stations for this particular year (2005). The same had occurred earlier at only one of the Kuwait Bay stations in early May 2004, when numbers there almost reached 90 000 ind.m-3. This unusually high abundance raised many questions, which the author tries to find answers for in the present paper. © 2010 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden.
