An ellipsometric study of the films formed on an iron-chromium alloy in orthophosphoric acid
Abstract
A preliminary ellipsometric study has been made of the films formed on Fe-12 %Cr alloy in orthophosphoric acid solutions of low pH at the open circuit potential. In the presence of an initial air-formed film, at room temperature, the data indicate that the non-protective/protective behaviour transition is characterised by (a) a rise in both the real part of the refractive index and the absorption index of the films formed and (b) an increasing tendency towards direct logarithmic film growth kinetics, and hence protective nature, at higher acid concentrations. © 1978.
