Correlations for the erosive wear of materials by liquid slurries
Abstract
The loss of material due to the erosive effects of impacting solid particles (slurries) is an off-encountered life-limiting process in several components in service. The main influencing properties of both the target and the erodent materials in this phenomenon are reviewed. For the specific case of the erosion of some ceramic materials by slurries in letdown valves in coal liquefaction plants, it is shown that the results may be explained in terms of either 'mechanical' or 'thermal' considerations.
