Effect of sterilization method on the polymerization kinetics of acrylic bone cement
Abstract
The effect of sterilization method on the acrylic bone cement's polymerization kinetics was analyzed. Two variants of powder were used, in one case, the powder was sterilized using ethylene oxide gas, EtO (ETO), while in the other, gamma irradiation, in ambient conditions, with a dosage of 2.5 Mrad, was used. It was observed that the polymerization rate when GAMMA is used would be much higher than that when ETO is used. It was found that when the cement powder is sterilized using ethylene oxide gas, the activation energy and the rate of polymerization were lower than when the powder is gamma irradiated, in ambient air.
