Evaluation of a synthetic bone defect test model for screening injectable bone cements

Abstract

The design of a semi-contained bone defect model to be used in the biomechanical screening of injectable bone cements was presented. In each model, the defect was centrally-located through-thickness cylindrical hole, diameter, d, filled with an injectable bone cement. The value of axial compressive stiffness, Se, of the FOAM model was determined from a diametral tension test, performed on a universal materials testing machine at a displacement rate of 5 mm/min. The Se with Ec of 2500 and 5400 MPa was determined to be 2583±15 and 2942±80 N/mm. respectively.
