Factors affecting response of raccoons to traps and population size estimation.

Abstract

A population of Procyon lotor in W Tennessee was sampled using mark-recapture techniques. Response to traps varied from one trapping occasion to the next and among individuals. Seasonal differences in trap success were significant, with success highest in the autumn and winter. A significant amount of the daily variation in trap success was due to temperature during autumn and winter. Following initial capture, no behavioural changes were found that would affect response to traps. Population density was estimated to be one raccoon per 7.2 ha.-from Authors
