Nonlinearity-induced spurs in fractional-N frequency synthesizers: State of the art
Abstract
Fractional-N frequency synthesizers are notorious for exhibiting spurious tones (spurs). Spurs can be introduced inadvertently by the divider controller or may result from interaction between a spur-free divider control signal and nonlinearities in the loop. This paper discusses the underlying problem, a variety of deterministic mechanisms that produce spurs, and techniques for mitigating and/or eliminating them.
