Delusional Realities, World-Traveling and Transitional Objects

Authors

Abstract

The concept of multiple realities (Schutz 1974) has been used to characterize aesthetic experiences, transitions from the everyday lifeworld to specialized settings (games, theater, etc.), and pathological delusions (Gallagher 2009). Hybrid transitional objects have been proposed as ways of explaining how transitions in and out of delusion (and such phenomena as double bookkeeping) take place (Cermolacce et al. 2021). Transitional objects more generally can operate as affordances that permit shifting from one reality to another, and, with respect to delusional experience, may offer psychotherapeutic possibilities. This chapter explores the notion of multiple realities and transitional objects, building on Maria Lugones’s (1987; 2003) notion of “world-traveling” in non-pathological, everyday circumstances and how this concept might be helpful in characterizing delusions.
