Building a Movement with Black Men: Culture Is the Key
Abstract
In this chapter, the authors describe a strengths-based initiative targeting Black men using culturally responsive, African-centered strategies and activities. This chapter explores the intentionally collaborative design, development, and implementation of a rites of passage experience, resulting in organization development and program activities. Given the multitude and perplexity of issues impacting Black Men, replication of efforts that provide evidence of success in improving the health and well-being of Black men demands attention and, where possible, replication. For more than 50 years collectively, the authors have walked the road of service, healing, helping, educating, and guiding Black men in health-promoting activities. Wearing the hats as social workers, therapists, educators, administrators, community developers, and researchers, the authors write with the wisdom of elders. In this chapter, we share our collective professional experiences, strength, and the hope of Black men healing each other, their families, and their communities.
