Belltower Coffeehouse & Studio: Negotiating hybrid value creation in a dual-mission arts venture
Abstract
This case study provides a detailed description of Belltower Coffeehouse & Studio, a community pottery studio, teaching space, and coffeehouse/restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee, and the challenges its founders grappled with as they negotiated its hybrid value as both a traditional for-profit venture and an arts endeavor focused on generating social and cultural value. This case can be used with undergraduate or graduate students studying arts entrepreneurship or arts management; additionally, it may be appropriate for use in advanced high school courses or adult/community education initiatives. Through discovering concepts such as dual-mission venture and institutional logics, tracing the circuitous path of Belltower's early days, and understanding how the challenge of balancing multiple missions compelled its founders to make a pivotal decision, students will emerge better-positioned to balance making art, making a living, and making a difference in their own future endeavors.
