EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF CONFINED POOL BOILING HEAT TRANSFER

Abstract

Boiling heat transfer of different surface configurations in a confined pool was experimentally investigated for distilled water boiling at atmospheric pressure. Four different surface configurations were studied, including: plane aluminum surface, plane aluminum surface covered in a single layer of steel spheres, plane aluminum surface bonded with aluminum foam using adhesive tape and again using epoxy. Experimental results were compared to the classic Rohsenow correlation, data from similar research, and values calculated using equations for natural convection heat transfer. For most experiments, surface heat flux and boiling heat transfer coefficient values for a given power input were lower than values calculated with the Rohsenow correlation. Relative standard errors associated with measurement precision and random error were also estimated for surface heat flux and boiling heat transfer coefficient. Error associated with temperature measurements was determined to be the dominating factor resulting in relatively large relative standard errors.
