Quantitative and physiological measures

Abstract

The quantitative measures discussed in this chapter offer objective, numericscore data for addressing research questions regarding relations between language and emotion. We provide some initial coverage of acoustic measures of sonic parameters of speech (duration, frequency, intensity, and timbre), but the main category of quantitative measures we discuss consists of physiological responses within various linguistic and emotional processing conditions. This chapter discusses the basic uses of these measures, defines each measure, briefly outlines how each measure can be employed in investigations of language and emotion and delineates advantages and limitations when using these measures. Suggestions on how to incorporate these measures in research are listed in the table in the chapter.
