Conducting Community-based Participatory Research with Minority Communities to Reduce Health Disparities

Abstract

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) emphasizes stakeholder engagement and capacity building and is an ideal approach to describe health disparities and to implement interventions for health equity. This chapter describes the rationale for using CBPR in health disparities research and reviews the evidence that CBPR is effective for use in the field. Examples of how CBPR can be successfully conducted with Black, Asian American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander communities are described. We describe how to design CBPR studies, challenges that face CBPR practitioners, and potential solutions.
