The Role of GIS in COVID-19 Management and Control
Abstract
This chapter introduces a compilation of reviews on how GIS has been used in COVID-19 research and highlights how scientific communities and policy makers could leverage GIS in future public health emergencies along with statistical and other socioeconomic modeling techniques. The interdisciplinary nature of how geographic and spatial analysis was used in COVID-19 research was notable among the published reviews. Geospatial techniques, especially WebGIS, have even been widely used to visualize the data on a map and were critical to informing the public regarding the spread of the virus and the overall trends of COVID-19 data, such as What are the case numbers for a certain area? Who in a defined area is being affected? Where did the virus originate? Taking a multidisciplinary approach for using GIS, this chapter provides a good comprehensive resource for leveraging GIS technology to make decisions, plan, and communicate various measures to control the spread of pandemic.
