Seismic evaluation of piping using experience data
Abstract
A methodology for field verification of the seismic ruggedness of piping in low seismicity regions is presented. The methodology is based on the results of research into the performance of piping in past strong-motion earthquakes. By concentrating on the realistic failure modes observed in the data, unnecessary conservatisms in conventional design practice are avoided. When used by engineers experienced in piping design and seismic experience data, the procedure provides an efficient, systematic alternative to qualification by analysis.
