Analysis of retrieved implants using electron spin resonance technique
Abstract
The use of electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, a free radical technique, for the analysis of retrieved medical implants was presented. The technique directly detected free radicals in organic, inorganic or polymeric materials. Two groups of clinically retrieved samples were prepared for ESR measurements. For the analysis, the implants were sterilized with gamma rays before implantation. For free radical measurements, and electron spin spectrometer was used. As ESR is a bulk measurement technique, post retrieval cleaning may not effect the cleaning as long as all the samples from a given region are prepared in an identical fashion.
