Abstract
"Magic, Injustice, and Reconciliations Within the Mabinogi" argues that magic functions as a facilitator for social reconciliation and as an indicator of conflict. Magic is used to uphold medieval Welsh values such as the importance of the gift, fair trade and exchange, and ultimately equal reciprocity. There is an emphasis on maintaining a balance between right and wrong deeds, and magic bridges the gap between impossible resolutions and the social reconciliation exemplified in the text. Additionally, magic functions as an indicator of conflict at points where fair resolutions are either unachieved or withheld by the characters for a greater purpose. This thesis closely analyzes the stories within the Mabinogi while creating a complex definition of magic as an indicator of conflict and means of reconciliation that exhibits the morality and values of medieval Wales.
