Abstract
In a collection of one short story, two poems, and a novella comprised of both prose and poetry, the concept of community is explored as it relates to the action of comfort, which, at its etymological roots, means "to be strong together." The first poem speaks to comfort as it exists in everyday life. The second poem and the short story are connected in theme, and in them there exists an "othering" of LGBT character(s), which has created a fear of being true to themselves. In the short story, this fear permeates even the safe space the characters have created in the midst of the apocalypse. In the novella, there exists a neglect of governmental care given to characters who endure devastating environmental disasters. In each piece, there is an examination of what creating community and safe space means, and how "being strong together" can be revolutionary in the face of systemic cruelty.
