Abstract
This thesis project examines three representations of the Memphis Sanitation Strike that stemmed from the Memphis Search for Meaning Committee's oral history work: At the River I Stand (1985), by Joan Beifuss; At the River I Stand (1993), produced by California Newsreel and directed by David Appleby, Allison Graham, and Steven Ross; and 1,300 Men: Memphis Strike '68, produced by The Root and Striking Voices. It analyzes these texts and argues for a more complete historical narrative of the strike, specifically one that places emphasis on the role of the sanitation workers in the strike.
