    Description

    Program honoring the "Mayor of Beale Street" Matthew Thornton, Sr. at East Trigg Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, on July 1, 1956. Paul Flowers was among those who offered testimonials.

    Thornton, a leader of the Black community and musician who performed with W.C. Handy, had won the title in a contest organized by the Memphis World newspaper in 1938 and held it until his death aged 90 in 1963.
