Abstract
Report from Cape Girardeau that area north of New Madrid had suffered from fissures and sand blows. Mentions that 6 square miles had sunk and that the depth of water was 4 feet in the sunk area. Good brief report.

LOUISVILLE (K) February 28. A gentleman on whom reliance can be placed, that lives within 25 miles of Cape Geradeau, and 18 miles above the mouth of the Ohio river, arrived in town on Friday last, confirms the report that the earth burst open and discharged quick sand and water to a considerable height, about eighteen or twenty miles above New Madrid, on the night of the 16th of Dec. and that about 6 miles square sunk, and water made in four feet deep. He apprehends some serious damage since his departure, which was on the 23d of December last.
