Letter detailing damage from the March 26, 1812 earthquake in the Caribbean at Carracas, Guyana and other locations.

Transcript

Extract of another letter, dated, Coro, April 20. Of Caraccas, I cannot give you an further details respecting its ruins, as I have no time. The former accounts are confirmed, and the destruction increases every day; for even as late as last Sunday, the earthquakes continued; this has been observed by the crew of a launch arrived from Cumana, which passed by Laguayra last Sunday; they were actually afraid that the boat would be destroyed by the shock they felt on the water when they crossed the bay. They only saw one house standing, the others had disappeared-they did not land but passed within gun-shot of the shore. The rebel expedition against Guayana, was completely routed also on Holy Thursday, as well by sea as by land. The Caracanians had passed the river; they all perished; the details were not yet arrived at Cumana when the launched sailed. Felipe Ectives and Bonilla were killed after losing their reputation and honor. We have not yet received the particulars of Monteverde's expedition. The truth is, that the inland town have acknowledged the Cortes, as far as Cumana, and that the people are arming themselves in favor of the good cause. Merida is a heap of ruins, according to a letter I received last night from Dr. Manuel Canas. Santa Martha experienced a shock, but did not sustain any injury. They were very much elated on account of the victory they had obtained over the rebels of Carthagena, who attacked them with 1000 men; but they were all either killed or taken, together with six gun-boats. The troops from Porto Rico are expected here this week.
