Abstract
The stories in this collection are based around a fictionalized Warren, Ohio andtake place during a decline in population, industry, and morale that began in the mid1970s and continues today. They aim to capture the experience of people of varying agesand situations over a period of about thirty years. The characters in these stories try tomake meaningful relationships despite bleak job prospects, closed schools, and shrinkingneighborhoods. They find themselves stuck as others move on, having to leave the cityin search of something else, or returning to the city though they might not want to. Theearliest covered event is the tornado of 1985, and the last story extends to thehypothetical future of the characters in an image that reflects the city itself.
