Abstract

This dissertation is a guide to performers for the practice and performance of Fernando Morais' 20 Estudos Característicos Brasileiros para Trompa. Included is biographical information about Morais, an explanation of why the etudes were composed, an analysis of three representative etudes, and a discussion regarding the pedagogical use of Morais' method by two university professors in Brazil. The ananlysis focuses on pertinent aspects for performance of the etudes such as form, harmony, melody, and rhythm. The interpretation and preparation guide show the challenges of and the approach to each etude by focusing on the extended techniques, range, endurance, articulation, melodic shape, and tempi and dynamics. Suggestions on preparatory exercises are also given.A complete chronological listing of Fernando Morais' works, a discography and listening suggestion are included in the appendix.
