Abstract
“Game of Chance” features a purportedly psychic protagonist, Lucy Cartwright, who works as a tarot card reader online and in public forums. After a series of toxic relationships and a lifetime of watching her mother’s relationships fail, Lucy is initiated into the world of tarot and Twin Flames by a fraudulent psychic named Christine. While romantic pressure from her culture and peers mounts, Lucy resorts to spellwork to manifest her Twin and then meets Chance, an optometry student and amateur gambler who falls for her quickly. The fragility of their connection is revealed when Lucy panics at contradictions in the tarot and the relationship collapses, forcing her on a pilgrimage of healing and reevaluating her beliefs.
