FRAMING THE RESILIENCE RESEARCH AGENDA OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES IN GLOBAL SOUTH COUNTRIES: A Review
Abstract
One of the most distinctive features of many countries in the Global South is their rapid urbanization, characterized by rapid growth in most of their small- and medium-sized cities (SMCs). Interestingly, the Global South urbanization scholarship often centers largely on major cities with little attention on SMCs. To contribute to the discourse on urban resilience in SMCs, this chapter reviews the existing literature on SMCs in the Global South to identify relevant subject areas, methodological approaches, and findings particular to this context. The review also looks at the contextual elements that affect resilience dynamics in SMCs in Global South countries. The chapter concludes by suggesting pathways for future research to help address the critical gaps and complexities in understanding and improving the resilience of SMCs in the Global South.
