Title

A crustal thickness constraint for central Pennsylvania.

Abstract

The timing and amplitude of long-period Ps conversions observed on the radial component of ground motion from a suite of teleseismic events were used to place constraints on crustal structure under the WWSSN station SCP (State College, Pennsylvania). Radial P waveforms from impulsive deep earthquakes were modeled in the time domain after corrections for instrument miscalibration. In addition, the Ps conversion from the Moho was extracted directly from the data from an equalization procedure which removed the instrument response and effective source time function. Using velocities obtained from a nearby refraction profile as a control, the timing of the Moho Ps conversions and later arriving reverberations suggested that the crustal thickness under SCP is 41km rather than the previous refraction estimate of 33km.-Authors
