Commerce and Insurance is the agency responsible for protecting Tennesseans through balanced oversight of fire safety, the insurance and securities industries, and a variety of regulated professions while enhancing consumer advocacy, education, and public safety.
The Division of Fire Prevention includes the state’s building and safety codes enforcement operations; electrical, residential, and marina inspections; manu-factured and modular housing; training for volunteer and career firefighters and codes officials through the state’s Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy; and certification of volunteer and career firefighters through the Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education Commission.
The Division of Regulatory Boards houses 26 boards, commissions, and programs that enforce professional standards of conduct and statutory mandates for Tennesseans in their professions and businesses—ranging from architects and engineers to contractors, cosmetologists, and accountants.
The Securities Division regulates the securities industry and the securities that are sold in, from, or into the state. Their mission is to protect Tennessee investors from fraud and deceptive sales practices and to maintain the integrity of the state’s securities market.
The TennCare Oversight Division monitors the financial condition and claims payment practices of the managed care companies that contract to provide services to TennCare, CoverKids, and CoverRx enrollees.
The Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA) trains state, county, and city law enforcement officers.
The Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission is administratively attached to the department and develops and enforces training and certification standards for all local police officers.
The Tennessee Emergency Communications Board is also administratively attached to the department and oversees the modernization and maintenance of the statewide 911 communications system.
