Abstract

In this October 2025 blog edition, we explore one of the most underestimated yet decisive elements of graduate school applications: letters of recommendation. A strong, specific, and enthusiastic letter can open doors that grades alone can’t, while a vague one can quietly close them. Learn how to choose the right recommenders, ask the right questions, and set them up for success.

We also spotlight PhD student Sadia Rinty and her journey from Bangladesh to the University of Memphis’s renowned CERI program, share upcoming graduate student events, and celebrate Memphis as a national leader in women-owned businesses. From academic tips to community inspiration, this edition is packed with valuable insights and opportunities for UofM graduate students.
