Abstract
The analysis of the paintings of the Netherlandish painter, Pieter Brueghel, explores the multi-faceted relationships between the Low Countries and the Kings of Spain, the rise of the Protestant Reformation and Iconoclasm with the subsequent Catholic Counter-Reformation, and the relationship between the painter and his interpretation of contemporary society. The breakdown takes into consideration abstract symbolisms, outside contemporary references, and the general climate of the "clash of cultures" to explore the concept of the birth of the satirical, political painting.
