Abstract
This paper serves as a textual explanation of the processes used in my Bachelor of Fine Art Thesis exhibition. My methods employ the semiotic theory of communication, photographic practices, and embossing text. I have used my camera as a simulated research component on my own relationship in order to 'examine' the ambiguity often found in cohabiting relationships. I propose that text accompanying an image can transcend communication barriers created when dealing with abstract concepts. Text/image interactions either act as a descriptor in an illustrative relationship or as a participant in a graphic relationship. By successfully combining both the visual and verbal communicative systems through embossment, my artwork challenges perceptions of intimacy within a heterosexual cohabiting relationship.
