Abstract

The collection mainly documents the business affairs of Jefferson Davis (1808-1889), the former president of the Confederate States of America, as handled by his son-in-law Joel Addison Hayes, Jr. (1848-1919). It also contains papers relating to Hayes' own business and financial dealings in Memphis and Nashville, and includes correspondence from members of the Davis and Hayes families. Included in the collection is correspondence, receipts and bills, cancelled checks, publications and clippings.
