    Abstract

    The letters of J. Edward James, of the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, consist of forty letters written between December 1862 and June 1865 to his sister Lizzie (later Elizabeth James Lamberson) of Galena, Illinois. The letters were written in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia, where James fought during the Civil War.
