Abstract

The U. S. War Department, Freedmen’s Bureau records is composed of correspondence, financial records, payrolls, and army rosters which concern the freedpeople and African American troops during the federal occupation of Memphis, Tennessee, in the later stages of the American Civil War. There is information about the bureau’s African American schools in Memphis, the Freedmen’s Bureaus of West Tennessee, Arkansas, the local bureau in Memphis, and the status of some Black troops stationed in and around Memphis.
