Description
Aerial view of the Century Tow of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, propelled by the Union Barge Line towboat "Sam Craig", arriving on the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee on April 30, 1930. It was the 100th tow of steel brought by the company from Pittsburgh to Memphis since the Memphis plant began production in 1924. The 10 barges contained nearly 10,000 tons of steel and were welcomed by a flotilla of other boats. The photograph was taken from a plane piloted by Vernon C. Omlie of the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service.
