Description

Interior view of the main floor of McLellan Stores on South Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee. In typewritten notes by W.L. Nolan dated May 1941 to J.C. Simpson, the manager of the McLellan Store in Belfast, Maine, on the verso of this postcard, he writes that the photograph also shows the stairway leading to the basement sales floor and the lounge on the mezzanine floor at the rear of store #108 in Memphis.

McLellan's was a five and dime store founded by William McLellan (1873-1960) in 1917 which expanded from Memphis to become a national chain of 200 stores by 1933. McLellan lost control of the company during the Great Depression.
