Description
Undated interior view of Clarence Saunders Sole Owner of My Name store no. 3 in Memphis, Tennessee. After losing control of his Piggly Wiggly store chain in 1924, self-service store pioneer Saunders (1881-1953) established new stores in Memphis the same year simply called Clarence Saunders: Sole Owner of My Name and by June there were already four in the city. The chain expanded across the country to number 220 stores by 1927. The Depression bankrupted Saunders and the Sole Owner stores were all gone by 1935.
