Photograph in frame, copied from a painting of Michael Charles Costillo, father of Ella Costillo Bennett, undated.
Mr. Costillo was born in County Tipperary, Ireland and was of Spanish lineage. He immigrated to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was a baby. The name "Castillo" was changed to "Costillo" when he came to the United States, through an error of spelling in identification. He married Ellen Doyle, also from County Tipperary, Ireland, when she was sixteen and he was twenty-six. They had two daughters, Mary "Mollie" and Ella Costillo. Mr. Costillo died in 1878.
