Description
A print by Jean Baptise Gautier titled “La Réponse Incroyable” published in Paris in 1797. A satire on the tortuous Anglo-French peace negotiations of 1796-1797: French foreign minister Charles-François Delacroix (right) greeting British diplomat Lord Malmesbury on his return to France. Delacroix says: "Good Day, My Lord. Charmed to see you in Paris, how are you?" Malmesbury replies: "I am much obliged for your gracious inquiry, but unable to respond for myself, I must send a dispatch to London, and when it comes back, I will know what I should say to you."
