Description

Celebrating the dedication of Nellie Angel Smith Hall, a women's dormitory at Memphis State University on Patterson Street, Memphis, Tennessee, on October 13, 1962, are Commissioner of Education Joe Morgan (left), Dr. Nellie Angel Smith and MSU President Dr. Cecil Humphreys. Dr. Smith (1882-1976) joined the West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1927 as the only faculty member with a PhD and taught Latin. She served as Dean of Women from 1927 to 1947 and was head of the department of modern and classical languages when she retired in 1952.
