Description
Four members of the Memphis State Eight--(l-r) Eleanor Gandy, Luther McClellan, Sammie Burnett, and Rose Blakney--walking to the Administration Building on the campus of Memphis State University in September 1959. Eight African American students, later known as the Memphis State Eight, were the first to be admitted to the university that year.
