Description
Letter written by Thomas Armstrong in camp near Shelbyville, Tennessee, to his sister, dated January 22, 1863. Thomas served in the Vicksburg Cadets, Chalmers Brigade, 9th Mississippi Regiment. He was killed near Atlanta on August 3, 1864.
The letter reads:
[page 1] Camp Near Shelbyville Ten Jan 22 1863
Dear sister it has been some time since I received your kind and very welcome letter which I now hasten to answer and to acknowledge the receipt of those truly valuable things which you were kind enough to send me and you must accept my best thanks for them and I asure [sic] you they have been very beneficial to me since the extremely cold weather we have had for the last ten or twelve days. You did not say whether you was well or not I hope you boath [sic] are well and enjoying the blessings of providence in a diferant [sic] way from what I am. So I guess you would like to hear something of the battle I tell you it was realy [sic] a hard one the enimy [sic] seemed determined to give us a drubing [sic] but we disapointed [sic] them greatly we being as determined as they so it was crash crash all day long and the continued roll of musketry sounded in ones ears as though everything was crumbling away we drove them but I tell you it was not without fighting and hard fighting to [sic] but thank god I came out safe and sound Hardees corps of our side did the most fighting or at least was the most succesfull [sic] driving [page 2] driving the enimy [sic] four or five miles. never giving them time to form a line so there is no use writting [sic] any more about the fight for I expect by this time you know a great deal more than I do I have not heard from home in a long time three or four months and when you visite again please tell John than in future any messages he may have for me to please write it himself and not send it through a half a dozen mouths before it gets to mine so I will come to a close please write soon and give me all the news that may be floating around
