As a commercial developer, John A. Elkington and his real estate company spearheaded the move to resuscitate Beale from an abandoned and decayed, but historic street, into a thriving commercial and entertainment area. The materials in this collection regard the redevelopment of Beale Street as a commercial and tourist entertainment district, predominately from the 1980s to the early 2000s.
